One Month Before Moving

• Gather moving supplies, boxes, tape, rope. 
• If moving far away, make any necessary travel arrangements like airline, hotel, and rental car reservations.
• Find a moving company or make truck rental reservations to move yourself.
• Finalize real estate and apartment rental needs in both your existing and your new home.
• Place legal, medical, and insurance records in a safe and accessible place.
• Tell the Post Office of your move.  Fill out one form asking the post office to forward your mail and the other can be used to notify people who send you mail. 

 Two Weeks Before Moving

• Inform gas, electric, water, cable, local telephone and trash removal services of your move. Sign up for utilities at your new address. 
• Inform long distance phone company of your move. Sign up for long distance service at your new address.
• Recruit moving-day help.
• Confirm any travel reservations (planes, hotels, etc.).
• Arrange to close or transfer your bank account, if appropriate.

 The Day Before Moving

• Set aside moving materials like a tape measure, pocketknife, packing boxes, tape, markers and paper (you can buy blank newsprint very reasonably and avoid getting black ink on everything),
• Pick up rental truck.
• Check oil and gas in your car.
• If traveling, make sure you have tickets, charge cards, medicines and other essentials.
• Pick up some drinks and non-perishable snacks for moving day; not just for you but for the helpers. 
• Get a good night's rest.

Moving Day

• Coordinate your helpers and give them clear directions.
• Keep your sense of humor, since something's likely to go wrong.
